The world must start
aggressively combating desertification,

In a message marking World Day to
Combat Desertification and Drought, Annan warned that increasing land
degradation is threatening food production and triggering humanitarian and
economic crises.

to expanding deserts, such as the Gobi,
which is consuming an additional 4,000
square miles each year. |

be the home of more than 4,000 people.
By the year 2008, all
of them had moved away and the village became completely deserted.
